Caffeine in Different Types of Tea
Pu-erh Tea: Pu-erh tea is a fermented dark tea with an earthy flavor. It contains approximately 60 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup, and can be enjoyed hot or iced.
Oolong Tea: Oolong tea has a mild taste and aroma, and contains around 37 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup. It should be steeped for 3 to 5 minutes in water that’s between 185°F and 205°F (85°C to 95°C).
Green Tea: Green tea offers the most antioxidants out of all the teas, as well as 25–29 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup. To get the best flavor from green tea, steep it in water that’s between 160°F and 180°F (70ºC to 80ºC) for 1–3 minutes.
Black Tea: Black tea has a robust flavor that contains about 47–50mg of caffeine per 8oz cup. For optimal brewing results, use boiling water (212˚F/ 100˚C) for 2-4 minutes depending on desired strength.
White Tea: White tea is known for its delicate sweetness and smooth texture — it only has 15–20mg of caffeine per 8oz cup! White teas are usually brewed at lower temperatures than other types; use 165˚ -185˚ F/ 74˚ - 85˚ C for 2-4 minutes depending on desired strength.
Chai Tea: Chai typically consists of black or oolong teas mixed with spices like cardamom, cinnamon, ginger root, cloves & nutmeg — making it slightly caffeinated with around 40mg per 8oz cup! The ideal temperature range when steeping chai is 190ª – 200ª F / 88 º - 93 º C ,for 4-5 minutes depending on desired strength.
